Featured Artist of the Month: ERIC NELSON

ERIC NELSON

Eric Nelson is an emerging writer originally from New Jersey, the son of a nurse and machinist. He has written for publications such as “Constellation” and “Zine World” and wrote the zine series “The Silk City Series,” which is now a book of short stories from Knickerbocker Circus Publishing. Heavily involved in the New York City DIY print culture, he works at ABC No Rio’s Zine Library, has read in various bookstores and festivals in the Northeast, prints a zine called “The Cup and Saucer Chronicles” and is currently at work on his debut novel. He aims to be the ‘Lil Wayne of literature.’ He can usually be found laughing loudly at something inappropriate. He lives in Queens and he loves it.

Artist Statement
While I treat literature as some people would a religion, I try not to take myself too seriously as an artist. My goal as a writer is to not only show reality from my perspective, but to also find a common ground with a reader. Much of my work is very class conscious and reflective of contemporary American culture, particularly in urban environments, because of the amount of interaction between people that takes place. I do try to keep material timeless and universal while being specific about particular places or moments in time. I’m a firm believer in sincerity and honesty, to the point of being brutal at some points. That’s something in my personality that definitely shows in what I write, no matter the format or genre. While certain scenes or characters may make people feel uncomfortable, it’s better than bullshit or gimmicks. Those may sell books, but they become stale much quicker.

I would love to gain a larger audience, but I’m happy as a clam that I am still very much connected to underground literature and DIY zine community, because of the emphasis on the art and the act of creating itself. It also taught me something I finally believe in now: to be your own hero.
